Playa Cielo Beachfront

What it's like

Playa Cielo has been part of Santa Teresa's beachfront for well over a decade, and today it runs as a small boutique hotel paired with its own restaurant, UMA. The setup is simple: a few self-contained units in a garden, a shared pool with sunbeds, and a path through the restaurant and bar straight onto the sand. Listings place it south of Villa Cacao Road, a short walk from Playa Carmen.

Because it's so small, it feels more like a private compound than a hotel. Every unit has a full kitchen, air conditioning, a smart TV, wifi and a private terrace looking onto the garden. Cleaning is daily, parking is free, and the hotel says a concierge is on call around the clock to help with tours, transport and restaurant bookings.

Rooms

There are 2 kinds of accommodation:

• Studio villas: Studios I and II each have a king bed, a work area and a fully equipped kitchen, and suit couples or solo travelers. Studio III adds a sofa bed, so it works for a third person.
• Family villa: 2 master bedrooms, a living room with a smart TV, a full kitchen and a private terrace, for up to 4 guests.

All of them share the pool and have direct access to the beach. The kitchens make it easy to cook breakfast or a simple dinner, which helps on a longer stay.

UMA, the restaurant

UMA is the hotel's Mediterranean restaurant and bar, set right where the garden meets the beach. The menu changes with what's local and in season, and there's a cocktail list to go with it. You can eat in the restaurant itself or out on the sand, where low tables, cushions and shade sails face the water, and it's a popular spot to watch the sunset. Weddings

The whole property can be rented for a beach wedding, with the hotel, restaurant, pool and beach access all included. The hotel offers planning, catering, bar service, decoration, photography and hair and makeup, and the studios and family villa can sleep up to 10 guests from the wedding party. The beach and the surf

You walk out of UMA straight onto the beach, so checking the waves takes about a minute. Conditions change with the tide and swell, so ask locally before paddling out. Beginners usually head for lessons at Playa Carmen, while stronger surfers spread out along Playa Santa Teresa. Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

It's a good match for couples, small families and anyone who wants a beachfront room and a good dinner without leaving the property. It isn't a big resort: there's no spa or gym listed, and with UMA open to the public, evenings around the restaurant can be lively, especially at sunset.

Getting there

Most people drive or take a shared shuttle to Santa Teresa, or fly into the Tambor or Cóbano airstrips and take a short transfer. Once you reach the Playa Carmen crossroads, the hotel is a few minutes away. Our travel guide has the full options.
