What it's like
Blue Surf Sanctuary is easy to spot from the air: 4 bungalows with bright blue roofs, set in a garden on a corner of the road that runs down toward the Suck Rock break in north Santa Teresa. It's a small, quiet compound rather than a hotel with a lobby. Guests share a tiled pool and an open-air rancho with a kitchen, dining table and lounge, so it can feel a bit like a house party with strangers, in a good way, if you like meeting other surfers.
The beach is only a couple of minutes away on foot, and the cafes and restaurants near Suck Rock are close by. The busier center of town is a longer walk or a short ride. Some guests mention traffic noise from the road, so light sleepers may want to ask which bungalow sits farthest back.
The bungalows
There are 4 bungalows, each with its own name and layout:
- Pacifico and Sereno: 2 queen beds each, so a family or 2 friends can share.
- Tranquilo: a queen bed plus a twin bunk.
- Armonia: set up more for couples.
The lodge lists air conditioning, ceiling fans, wifi, a laptop-sized safe, a big private balcony, daily housekeeping and night security. Bathrooms have walk-in showers, and the interiors use carved wood and teak furniture. There's no restaurant on site. You can cook in the shared kitchen, hire a private chef, or walk out for meals.
The surf
Surfing is the main reason people stay here. The lodge runs daily coached sessions: the coaches check the swell, tide and wind, then take you to the beach break at Playa Hermosa or drive you to another nearby spot that suits your level. Lessons are offered for beginners, intermediates and advanced surfers, and you book them by emailing the surf team. Getting there
Most guests fly into San José or Liberia. From San José you can take a short domestic flight to Tambor and drive about 30 to 35 minutes, or drive to Puntarenas and take the ferry to Paquera.
